we love the name because it's happy, and that's the point of our being. the phoenix location of my florist was originally home to the largest florist in the city for an amazing 49 years, from 1947 until 1996. the wonderful and historic sign still stands almost 4 stories above the building, and the my florist Logo we use today comes from that original sign. the story of my florist starts with vada schwartz, the guiding spirit behind the business. at its height, the florist location occupied a series of buildings, each of them painted a vibrant orchid color inside an out. all the delivery trucks were orchid as well! mrs. schwatrz literally lived in orchid, from her everyday dress, to the color of her cadillac- and of course, she wore a beautiful and fresh orchid each day, offering customers the opportunity to receive free fresh flowers if they ever caught her without one on her person. the stories of mrs. schwartz' antics over the years would make any fun-lover proud (and maybe blush sometimes, too!). we particularly liked hearing of the time that she rode up on a horse, bandana across her face and proceeded to hold up her own store at gun point. she galloped away with all the money from the register, not to be seen for 2 weeks!
well, you get the point. my florist was a place that brought smiles to those who worked there and to a great, great many customers over the years. there was so much goodwill that went with the building and the name that it would have been impossible to consider any other title for our cafe. as illogical as it is, we continue to use the name in Ventura for the very simple reason that it makes us happy and that it honors our patron saint, vada schwartz.
